Mission
Feilin Lin’s School of Piano located at West Music in Coralville, Iowa, is dedicated to the development of fine young
Pre-college pianists at all levels of instruction. Whether a student plays for personal enjoyment, or wishes to
participate in piano festivals, competitions, and other performing events, each student receives the highest level of
individualized teaching from one of several instructors with advanced degrees in piano performance.
Through positive meticulous instruction, students are inspired to embrace the highest standards of musical and
virtuoso piano technique as they develop into confident well-rounded pianists.
Traditional Piano Curriculum
European classical piano techniques are the main curriculum taught at Feilin Lin’s School of Piano. In addition to
weekly lessons, students can learn music theory, ear training, Solfege/Solfeggio (a French and Italian method of piano
instruction where the instructor emphasizes singing as a path towards developing a pianist’s pitch and musicality), and
other important piano performance methods and skills. Students are able to learn a diverse curriculum of piano
repertoire.
Beginning students commence piano lessons with a thirty-minute weekly lesson during their first six months of
instruction. Thereafter, students begin intermediate-beginner instruction with either a forty-five or sixty-minute
weekly lesson. Intermediate and advanced level piano students commence piano studies with either a forty-five or
sixty-minute weekly lesson, depending on the student’s current level of preparation and needs.
Although all piano lessons are in English, initial bilingual instruction in Chinese Mandarin, Korean, and Afrikans is
available for foreign-born students new to Iowa who are still learning English.
Performance Opportunities
Students at Feilin Lin’s School of Piano are gently introduced to the pleasures of piano performance. From the
smaller, intimate environment of private seminars, to the larger performance venues of large-hall recitals or
competitions, students are given the opportunity to perform in different events to develop their musicianship. Many
students who began playing piano for fun have gone on to win district, state, regional, national, and international
competitions and prizes.
Performers Who Teach
To develop young pianists to their best potential, Feilin Lin hires qualified piano instructors who can both perform
and teach. All piano teachers hired to teach at Feilin Lin’s School of Piano are certified pianists with advanced
university and conservatory degrees in piano performance and pedagogy. Collectively, they have attended some of
the finest piano programs, to include The Academy of Music and Fine Arts in Vienna, Austria; Indiana University;
The Cleveland Institute of Music; and Ewha’s Women University in Seoul, Korea.
